As the summer movie season (such as it is) rolls on, Boxoffice Pro presents the ten highest-grossing films ever released in June, adjusted for ticket price inflation.
(Note: the numbers below only count the original theatrical run, not including subsequent re-releases.)
#1: Jaws
The movie that arguably invented the concept of the summer blockbuster as we know it, 1975’s horror thriller took a bite out of the box office with $260.0M, equivalent to $1.17B today.
#2: E.T.
The alien could certainly afford the phone bill when he phoned home, as 1982’s sci-fi family film earned $359.1M, equivalent to $1.11B today. Note: some sources list the inflation-adjusted earnings of E.T. above Jaws, but that’s only counting E.T.‘s subsequent theatrical re-releases.
#3: Jurassic Park
Steven Spielberg claims the gold, silver, and bronze medals on this list, as 1993’s sci-fi thriller roared to $357.0M, equivalent to $790.0M today.
#4: Jurassic World
Though not directed by Spielberg nor featuring any of the characters from the original film, 2015’s sequel taking place within the same cinematic universe earned $652.2M, equivalent to $708.7M today.
#5: The Lion King
1994’s Disney Renaissance classic felt the love tonight with $312.8M, equivalent to $702.3M. If you’re wondering where this past summer’s CGI remake is on this list, that film was released in July, not June.
#6: Raiders of the Lost Ark
As if Spielberg didn’t have enough entries on this list, 1981’s inaugural Indiana Jones fantasy adventure lassoed $212.2M, equivalent to $699.2M today.
#7: Grease
Audiences kept saying “You’re the one that I want” to this 1978 musical as it drove to $159.9M, equivalent to $626.2M today.
#8: Ghostbusters
Who you gonna call? Presumably your accountant, to keept track of how much money 1984’s fantasy comedy earned: $229.2M, equivalent to $624.9M today.
#9: Cleopatra
Though probably the least recognized film on this list to a modern-day audience, 1963’s historical epic was the highest grossing film of that year, commanding $57.7M, equivalent to $615.4M today.
#10: Incredibles 2
From just last summer, Pixar’s superhero comedy sequel dashed to $611.9M. Read our interview with the Incredibles 2 team, including director Brad Bird, here.
