Avengers: Endgame Adds $36.7M Domestic, $82.2M Overseas on Monday to Become #10 Global Earner of All-Time In Six Days

Tuesday Update: Following an historic weekend at the global box office, Disney reports this morning that Avengers: Endgame scored $36.7 million domestically and $82.2 million overseas on Monday. That brings the respective cumes to $393.3 million and $948.7 million, totaling for a staggering $1.3426 billion global haul thus far.

Domestic

Endgame‘s Monday gross represented the third best ever for any domestic Monday — topping Rogue One‘s $32.1 million while trailing only Black Panther‘s $40.15 million first Monday and Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ $40.1 million first Monday.

That being said, Panther had the aid of Presidents Day landing on its first Monday, while most schools were also out of session for Force‘s first Monday coming four days before Christmas in 2015.

Adjusted for ticket price inflation, Endgame topped The Dark Knight‘s $31.1 million adjusted ($24.5 million originally) as the best Monday performance ever for a film without the aid of a holiday attendance boost.

With $393.3 million, Endgame leaped from #46 to #35 on the all-time domestic chart, surpassing the lifetime gross (not adjusted for inflation) of films like Spider-Man 2 ($373.6 million), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($377.9 million), Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith ($380.3 million), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($381.2 million), and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 ($389.8 million).

Overseas & Global

Worldwide, Endgame has now passed The Fate of the Furious ($1.236 billion), Incredibles 2 ($1.243 billion), Beauty and the Beast (2017) ($1.264 billion), Frozen ($1.277 billion), Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ($1.31 billion), Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($1.333 billion), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($1.342 billion) to become 10th highest grossing film of all time globally after just six days of release.

Monday also saw Endgame top Wolf Warrior 2 ($868 million), Frozen ($876 million), Fallen Kingdom ($892 million), The Avengers ($896 million), and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($946 million) to become the 9th highest grossing film of all time internationally.

Yesterday’s global figures include a $7.8 million opening in Russia, the highest opening day of all-time in that territory. It was 59 percent ahead of Infinity War‘s first day in Russia, which opened on a Thursday.

Disney projects that Tuesday’s earnings will send the entire 22-film suite of the MCU cross the $20 billion global mark.

That will also send Disney’s studio total for 2019 past $1 billion domestically ($1.01 billion), overseas box office past $2 billion ($2.3 billion), and global box office past $3 billion ($3.3 billion).

Avengers: Endgame Online Ticket Sales Shatter Records Over Opening Weekend on Atom Tickets

PRESS RELEASE —

Santa Monica, CA – April 29, 2019 – Atom Tickets, the social movie ticketing app, announced today that Avengers: Endgame set a new record for most tickets sold online over opening weekend on Atom. In fact, the movie sold nearly twice as many tickets as the next top seller.

Top 5 biggest online ticket sales for opening weekend on Atom –

  1. Avengers: Endgame
  2. Deadpool 2
  3. Avengers: Infinity War
  4. Star Wars: Last Jedi
  5. Aquaman

As the epic movie enters its second weekend across the country, it is currently the most pre-ordered movie ticket on Atom with showtimes selling out again. The demand to reserve seats for Avengers: Endgame lifted Atom’s box office share (of Atom enabled theaters) reinforcing reports that more people bought tickets online for this movie than any other movie in recent history.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of this historical theatrical event for Avengers: Endgame, from driving  awareness of ticket sales with an exclusive movie poster to various digital marketing campaigns. We know that millions of our customers were among the first to see the epic movie,” said Matthew Bakal, co-founder and chairman of Atom Tickets. “On Atom, we’re already seeing huge interest in this movie in the coming weeks as our online ticket sales continue to be predominately for Avengers: Endgame.”

Avengers: Endgame has been breaking records on Atom since tickets went on sale April 2:

  • Within the first hour of tickets going on sale, Avengers: Endgame sold THREE times the amount of tickets Avengers: Infinity War sold last year
  • Within the first day, Avengers: Endgame sold FIVE times the amount of sales of the previous record set by Aquaman
  • After its first week of pre-sales, it sold nearly TWICE as many tickets as the next four record holders combined, which includesAquaman, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Avengers: Infinity War and Captain Marvel
  • Within 10 days it became the best pre-sale title of all time

Single-Day Records for Attendance and Food and Beverage Set on Saturday at AMC Theatres® in the United States

PRESS RELEASE —

LEAWOOD, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the world, today announced setting new records for its theatres in the United States. AMC confirmed that it set a new single-day U.S. attendance record on Saturday, as well as twice setting new single-day Food & Beverage revenue records in the U.S., doing so back-to-back on Friday and again on Saturday.

With AVENGERS: ENDGAME on its way to demolishing the previous opening-weekend domestic industry box office record, it also helped fuel an all-time single day attendance record at AMC on Saturday with more than 2.6 million tickets sold. This easily outpaced the previous single-day U.S. attendance record for AMC set during the opening weekend of BLACK PANTHER, just fourteen months earlier in 2018.

As fans settled into their seats this weekend, they did so with plenty of movie snacks. AMC started the weekend on Friday with a new single-day U.S. F&B revenue record of more than $13 million. That record lasted all of one night, before it was shattered again on Saturday, with more than $15 million sold. To set a new single day F&B revenue record on back-to-back days means AMC was serving up to its moviegoing guests A LOT of popcorn, pretzel bites, hot dogs, flatbread pizza, Coca-Cola Freestyle and specialty cocktails.

Moviegoers were also big on planning ahead this weekend. AMC doubled its previous record for single-day mobile F&B pre-orders, through the mobile app and website.

The attendance and F&B records add to an already impressive number of other new marks set at AMC’s U.S. theatres since Thursday. A record-number 19 AMC locations were open continuously around-the-clock this weekend from Thursday morning through Sunday night. The 63,000 AVENGERS: ENDGAME showtimes this weekend is 16,000 more than the previous record for a single movie on opening weekend. AMC also put a weekend-record nearly 11 million tickets on sale from Thursday through Sunday for AVENGERS: ENDGAME. Demand for AVENGERS: ENDGAME was so strong that AMC added more than 5,000 last minute showtimes this weekend, above and beyond its already ambitious and record setting plan announced on Friday morning.

Despite the record-setting attendance this weekend, AMC still has millions of tickets available this week, ensuring that anyone who wants to see this history-making movie can find a ticket at AMC. To find showtimes and secure a ticket to AVENGERS: ENDGAME, guests can visit amctheatres.com and the AMC Theatres mobile app.

Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame Shatters Box Office Records with Historic $1.2 Billion Global Debut

Disney’s official press release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MARVEL STUDIOS’ ‘AVENGERS: ENDGAME’ SHATTERS BOX OFFICE RECORDS WITH HISTORIC $1.2 BILLION GLOBAL DEBUT

Records Fall as Anthony and Joe Russo-Directed Blockbuster Posts Estimated $350 Million Domestic and $859 Million International Debuts

International Gross Includes Record Estimated $330.5 Million Opening in China

BURBANK, Calif. – April 28, 2019 – Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Endgame” made history this weekend with a record-shattering estimated global debut of $1,209.0 million, becoming the first film in history to surpass $1 billion in its opening weekend. It reached the billion-dollar threshold in just five days, more than twice as fast as its predecessor “Avengers: Infinity War,” which held the record at 11 days. The film also set domestic and international records.

“Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “Though ‘Endgame’ is far from an end for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these first 22 films constitute a sprawling achievement, and this weekend’s monumental success is a testament to the world they’ve envisioned, the talent involved, and their collective passion, matched by the irrepressible enthusiasm of fans around the world.”

“From the very beginning with ‘Iron Man,’ all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life onscreen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics,” said Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios. “That we’ve had so many other successes in this journey leading to this unbelievable result with ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has been almost entirely due to the fans around the world who have supported us through it all. Our directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, and our writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, really brought this story home, and I am also incredibly thankful for our cast and filmmakers from across the MCU and all who’ve worked so hard to make these films the best they can be, including the amazing teams at Marvel Studios and Disney. And of course, without Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, none of this would have been possible.”

Said directors Anthony and Joe Russo, “We poured our heart and soul into ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ hoping to tell a story that would inspire audiences around the world. Our family of cast and crew felt honored to be entrusted with bringing the Infinity Saga to a close. To Kevin Feige, everyone at Disney and Marvel, and the incredible, global community of fans – thank you.”

Seven years after releasing the first film to ever break the $200 million mark in its debut with 2012’s “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Studios have posted the first-ever $300 million domestic debut in history with “Avengers: Endgame.” The film kicked off with a record $60 million in Thursday previews contributing to a record first-day gross of $156.7 million. A record estimated Saturday of $109 million and a record estimated Sunday of $84.3 million bring the estimated debut to $350 million across three days from an all-time industry high 4,662 theatres.

The estimated international debut of $859 million, including a record estimated debut of $330.5 million in China, is also the highest of all time and even surpasses the previous global debut record of $640 million set by “Avengers: Infinity War” last year (which did not include a day-and-date debut in China).

Key stats for “Avengers: Endgame”:

Studio Weekend Estimates: Avengers: Endgame Shatters Records On Its Way to Breathtaking $350M Domestic, $1.209B Global Debut

Avengers: Endgame exploded into multiplexes this weekend to resounding acclaim and extraordinary box office returns, smashing nearly every record in the books and stunning even the most bullish of industry pundits on its way to an unbelievable $350 million opening, far surpassing the $257.6 million record held by last year’s Avengers: Infinity War and becoming the first movie in history to surpass $300 million in its opening weekend in North America. The debut represents an enormous 36% jump over Infinity War‘s already-massive debut weekend and the highest per-theater average of all time ($75K) for a film opening in wide release, easily besting Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ previous record of $59,982.

Overseas, Endgame easily broke not only The Fate of the Furious‘s international opening-weekend record of $443.1 million but Infinity War‘s global opening weekend record of $640.5 million (which didn’t include China, where Endgame made a record $330.5 million over its first five days) with a jaw-dropping $859 million, bringing the 22nd installment in the MCU to an unprecedented $1.209 billion globally in just five days. It is the first film ever to surpass $1 billion global in its opening weekend, and the eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to have crossed that threshold.

The powerhouse debut lifted the overall weekend box office to record levels–a feat accomplished by Endgame alone–and served as a remarkable finish to the most profitable franchise in cinema history.

Going into the weekend, no one questioned whether Endgame–the finale to the current cycle in the franchise–would break the all-time record. Not only is it one of the most anticipated films in history, it’s the culmination of an epic storyline that has unspooled over an unbelievable 22 films in just over a decade and redefined modern moviegoing as we know it. In truth, the episodic nature of the film series and Infinity War‘s cliffhanger ending  made Endgame less like the final installment of a movie franchise than the series finale of a beloved TV show–albeit one with a mega budget that played in multiplexes as opposed to people’s living rooms.

Heading into the weekend, Endgame set a pre-sales record on Fandango, having sold five times as many tickets as Infinity War in advance of its release and selling out over 8,000 showings by Wednesday morning. Demand skyrocketed so high that many theaters added extra showings of the three-hour plus film over the weekend, with some even screening it on a 24-hour basis to accommodate the overwhelming clamor by audiences to see it right out of the gate. That helped overcome the film’s epic 181-minute running time, which would ordinarily have limited the number of screenings offered per day.

It certainly didn’t hurt that Endgame debuted on the highest number of screens ever in North America at 4,662, eclipsing Despicable Me 3‘s 4,529 (not to mention Infinity War‘s 4,474). With a 96% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reviews also surpassed those for Infinity War (which came in at 85%) and nearly every other Marvel Cinematic Universe installment aside from Black Panther, which finished just a tick higher at 97%. Audiences predictably ate it up, with Endgame receiving a perfect “A+” CinemaScore and a 92% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

More to come.

Sinemia Ends U.S. Subscription Service “Effective Immediately”

Earlier today, Sinemia announced via a statement on its website that the their third-party subscription service in the U.S. would be coming to an end, “effective immediately.”

Originally launched in 2014, Sinemia offered subscription services in Australia and several European markets before expanding to North America in 2018. Like its rival MoviePass, Sinemia offered a third-party subscription service to moviegoers, allowing them to buy tickets—a variable number, depending on the individual users’ plan—to different cinema chains. Sinemia’s real competition proved to be not the much-beleaguered MoviePass, however, but chain-specific subscription services like AMC A-List and Cinemark Movie Club, both of which have seen substantial growth over the last year. As put in Sinemia’s statement:

“[W]e didn’t see a path to sustainability as an independent movie ticket subscription service in the face of competition from movie theaters as they build their own subscriptions. Thanks to the cost advantage and cross-sell opportunities, movie theaters will be prominent in the movie ticket subscription economy.”

In the United States alone, Alamo Drafthouse and Showcase Cinemas and Studio Movie Grill have also launched subscription services.

Sinemia also cites “unexpected legal proceedings” as one reason for the closure, a possible reference to the class-action lawsuit brought against the company alleging that fees turned the service into a “bait-and-switch scheme.” Ultimately, writes Sinemia, “The competition in the U.S. market and the core economics of what it costs to deliver Sinemia’s end-to-end experience ultimately lead us to the decision of discontinuing our US operations.”

The state of Sinemia’s other offerings has not yet been clarified. Beginning in 2018, Sinemia launched Sinemia Enterprise, a B2B business solution by which the company builds subscription programs for exhibition chains. In an interview conducted in February of this year, a Sinemia spokesperson noted that Sinemia Enterprise had at that time partnered with more than ten chains worldwide. There’s some competition in that arena, as well, as ticketing platform Atom Tickets announced a similar service last month. If Sinemia were jettisoning its third-party subscription service to focus on Sinemia Enterprise, it would be in line with a statement made by founder and CEO Rifat Oguz at the 2018 Geneva Convention: “We think that Sinemia is a fintech company rather than a movie ticketing company.”

The status of Sinemia Enterprise is not clear following today’s announcement, nor is its stance on direct ticketing, another area the company had moved into in recent months. No information has been provided as to whether Sinemia’s international subscription programs—available in Canada, the UK, Turkey, and England—will remain operational. Boxoffice has reached out to Sinemia for comment and will update this piece with any additional information.

AMC Theatres Has 10 Million Seats and 58,000 Screenings of Avengers: Endgame This Weekend

PRESS RELEASE —

LEAWOOD, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– AMC Theatres® (NYSE:AMC), the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and the world, today announced that in response to eye-popping advance sales for AVENGERS: ENDGAME and having just set an all-time record for Thursday night box office sales, the Company has shattered its previous record for single-movie screenings over a weekend. The approximately 58,000 AVENGERS: ENDGAME showtimes that AMC is programming from Thursday night through Sunday ensures that millions of tickets remain available for movie fans this weekend.

The 58,000 show starts this weekend is 10,000 more than the previous record weekend, held by the opening weekend of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR in 2018.

This gives moviegoers approximately 10 million possible AMC seats in which to watch AVENGERS: ENDGAME on its opening weekend. This represents another record for AMC.

“With wildly enthusiastic critic and fan reviews, interest in AVENGERS: ENDGAME has continued to grow beyond even the most optimistic projections. AMC wants everyone to be able to participate in this national cultural event of seeing AVENGERS: ENDGAME now on the big screen. So, at AMC Theatres, we have set aside approximately 10 million seats and 58,000 showtimes for this historic event,” said AMC CEO Adam Aron. “AMC has dedicated more seats and more showtimes behind this film’s opening than for any other movie in our history. While ticket sales to date have been incredibly robust, we still have millions of available seats for those making last minute decisions to go to the movies in theatres this weekend and share in the euphoria.”

To find showtimes and secure a ticket to opening weekend of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, guests can visit amctheatres.com and the AMC Theatres mobile app.

Long Range Tracking: Toy Story 4 & Child’s Play

This week’s report takes a first look at the anticipated Pixar sequel, as well as another remake of a classic ’80s/’90s horror franchise.

Toy Story 4
Opening Weekend Range: $105 – 125 million

PROS:

  • The Toy Story franchise remains beloved by families and Pixar fans after 24 years in action, and the nine-year gap between sequels could serve to aid anticipation — as well as introduce the series to a new generation of kids.
  • Reactions to early teaser trailers for this sequel have been largely very positive, with new characters like Forky and the stuffed animals voiced by Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key standing out so far.
  • This will represent the last tentpole, computer-animated comedy of the summer, which should bode well if reviews and word of mouth are strong as they have been for each of the first three films.

CONS:

  • Following up Toy Story 3 could be a bigger challenge than ever for the franchise after that film earned Oscar recognition and was heralded by many as the perfect conclusion to the series. This won’t deter younger fans, but, the demand among adults who grew up with the original films doesn’t appear to be as measurably strong as it was for Incredibles 2 or Finding Dory at this stage in the pre-release window.
  • Opening two weeks after The Secret Life of Pets 2 creates an interesting competitive crossover given the very similar target audiences. That film’s reception could be key toward Toy Story 4‘s ultimate potential.

Child’s Play (2019)
Opening Weekend Range: $10 – 20 million

PROS:

  • The original three films were low-budget success stories in the world of B-rate horror back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, which might create some nostalgia for a return to the series among adult horror fans.
  • Casting Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry could be advantageous toward boosting appeal among millennials.

CONS:

  • The volume of horror titles opening this summer might serve to reduce this film’s chances of a breakout, particularly with Annabelle Comes Home opening one week later and bringing with it a built-in fan base from the Conjuring universe.
  • Nostalgic horror remakes have had a modest time at the box office in recent years. Although the recent Pet Sematary opened well, it had the aid of the resurgent Stephen King brand behind it. Early comps for this title include 2015’s Poltergeist and 2013’s Carrie.

Avengers: Endgame Surpasses Force Awakens Domestic Preview Record w/ $60M, Reaches $305M Overseas In Two Days

Friday Report: Disney reports this morning that Avengers: Endgame took in a record $60 million in Thursday night earnings domestically, overtaking the previous record of $57 million held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This also bests the $39 million of last year’s Avengers: Infinity War by a 54 percent, providing an early signal that this weekend is not only in store for a record performance, but one of perhaps monumental significance. Check our our full analysis here.

Overseas, the Marvel Cinematic Universe epic has opened in 46 markets now and earned a staggering $305 million in its first two days.

We’ll be updating this post as more reports come in.

Key notes and territory earnings breakdowns from Disney:

The film has so far registered the highest all-time industry single day
in China (incl. midnights), Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, The Philippines, Korea (admissions), UK, Brazil, Egypt, Panama, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Trinidad and Uruguay. It has also registered the highest all-time industry opening day
in Indonesia, Malaysia, Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Bosnia/Herz, Czech Rep, Serbia (non-local), Slovakia, Turkey and Ukraine.

Today, in addition to its North American debut, the film opens in Mexico, Spain, India and Japan along with South Africa, Vietnam, Venezuela and Ecuador.  The only market not opening this weekend is Russia (Apr 29).

. Australia and New Zealand took advantage of Anzac Day with respective drops of just -3% and -1%.
· Rest of Asia:  Highest all-time industry Thursday
in Taiwan and Malaysia.
· Italy: After posting the #2 all-time industry opening day yesterday, Avengers: Endgame has followed that with a #2 all-time industry Thursday.

Avengers: Endgame is currently pacing ahead of Avengers: Infinity War in all markets; however, at this early stage, it is not completely possible to compare overall performance to date vs comps as the comps often opened on different days to Avengers: Endgame for the 46 territories to date.

Avengers: Endgame has set IMAX opening day records in 38 markets already, including China, France, Germany, Taiwan, Brazil and Argentina, with $33M IMAX box office globally to date.  In China, it has posted $21M IMAX in the first two days, already beating the 3 day opening weekend record held by Avengers: Infinity War ($20.3M).

Weekend Forecast: Avengers: Endgame Poised to Shatter Domestic & Global Box Office Records

Without embracing too much hyperbole, it’s safe to say that one of the most anticipated films of all time is set to debut this weekend as Avengers: Endgame prepares to take the global box office by storm.

The film represents a finale to the unprecedented 22-chapter Infinity Saga began by 2008’s Iron Man, and while the Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue for years to come, Endgame represents the end of the line for its first major over-arching story — and, perhaps, a few leading characters. Be sure to check out our interview with co-director Joe Russo for his thoughts on what the film and the franchise mean to fans and moviegoers around the world.

Recent tracking has suggested that the film is on course for an historic domestic launch, but pinpointing its exact trajectory has become one of the most daunting box office subjects on record. Since this film clearly has a perfect storm brewing in its favor, we’re foregoing the usual “pros and cons” breakdown and focusing on a handful of elements that will be key to the epic’s efforts toward shattering a bevy of records.

Pre-Sales

When pre-sales began earlier this month, Fandango reported Endgame sold five times as many tickets as Avengers: Infinity War did one year ago before setting the standing opening weekend record of $257.7 million. Endgame also bested the record for the company’s top first week and first day of pre-sales, eclipsingStar Wars: The Force Awakens.

The caveat here is that Force began sales more than two months before release — meaning Endgame had a greater urgency within a shorter purchasing window, plus over three years’ worth of evolving pre-sales behavior among consumers.

Still, advance sales are key because Star Wars as a franchise had always been king of the hill in this category. Infinity War didn’t match Force‘s, or even Last Jedi‘s, Fandango records — despite eventually taking away the latter’s $247.8 million first weekend record. The importance of that is further compounded by the fact that Force opened a week before Christmas, which arguably may have deflated its full potential on opening weekend had it opened weeks away from a major holiday — the start of summer, for example.

Now, though, Endgame is has become the company’s all-time best pre-seller and has sold out over 8,000 showtimes nationwide as of Wednesday morning — from metro areas to small cities. That’s a remarkable feat that suggests momentum could carry the film well past what usual tracking metrics suggest will already be a record weekend.

Is Endgame an outlier behaving more like a fan-heavy Star Wars film in the pre-sales window, or will it prove to still perform like a slightly-less-front-loaded Marvel film throughout the weekend? It’s a question we won’t have answered until the numbers roll in, unfortunately. While Star Wars itself has a vast audience that made it less front-loaded than most franchises, Marvel films have shown to be (relatively) more back-loaded during opening weekend advance sales up until this point.

Unofficially, though, we’re observing rough pre-sales data trends throughout the weekend that point to this still behaving like Infinity War (which only declined 23 percent on its first Saturday) rather than Force Awakens (which eased 43 percent).

Showtimes & Capacity

The perceived disadvantage of Endgame‘s 181-minute run time has been that it would limit the number of showtimes available throughout the weekend (roughly translating to one less per day than Infinity War), thus meaning those shows would need to sell significantly more tickets to top Infinity‘s weekend record by more than a small margin.

Exhibitors have answered the call, though. Sky-high demand for tickets has prompted chains like AMC to run the film around the clock through opening weekend, keeping showtimes available for 72 hours straight. There are multiple reports of early morning sellouts for Thursday-into-Friday, not to mention consistent sellouts through Saturday and Sunday’s prime showtimes.

In fact, Webedia’s Showtimes Dashboard reveals that Endgame is actually booked for nearly 229,000 showtimes across 3,492 theaters in its sample size. That’s 13 percent more than Infinity War‘s final count of 202,025 showtimes across a 3,560 theater sample.

Worth noting is that observed bookings indicate a significantly higher share of 2D shows for Endgame and a lower share of 3D shows versus Infinity War. While overall volume of sales — especially at IMAX, Dolby, and other PLF formats — could counter-balance the comparison, that still means fewer 3D surcharges on traditional screens to boost box office revenue.

While sellouts are frequent, there are still plenty of available options for prospective ticket-buyers once looking beyond Thursday and Friday. While some analysts question the challenge of capacity, open showtimes remain with generally decent seating available in many areas once looking past Friday evening shows (although those seats are quickly filling up as well).

The remaining X factors: will less ardent fans settle for a 10am or 9pm show in a small theater later in the weekend or wait until next week for a better seat in a premium theater? This is the ultimate determining factor in capacity potential, and one that won’t be answered until walk-up business begins this weekend (which, again, has been strong for Marvel films in years past).

Tracking

Traditional tracking metrics are, simply put, through the roof. Our Trailer Impact surveys have generated the best results of any film since tracking began last year, with Endgame standing at an astounding 94 percent “Positive Interest” score entering today. That includes 77 percent of moviegoers responding as “Definitely Interested,” 17 percent as “Interested,” 5 percent as “Not Very Interested,” and a mere 1 percent as “Definitely Not Interested.”

On traditional tracking, the film has exceeded the metrics of Infinity War through the same point before release, by significant margins in some cases.

Per-Theater Averages

Last year, Infinity War averaged $57,599 per theater (it opened at 4,474 locations). That’s the second highest average of all time behind Force Awakens ($59,982 at 4,134 locations) and third best among films opening in at least 1,000 theaters when adjusted for current ticket prices (we’re using NATO’s $9.11 average at the end of 2018).

The inflation figure trails Force, but the top seed belongs to another Star Wars film — 1983’s Return of the Jedi. That film earned $66,439 per location ($22,973 in 1983 sales) when it opened in 1,002 theaters. The sample size is significantly smaller, of course, but moviegoing habits are also dramatically different than they were 36 years ago — opening weekend demand in the early 1980s would practically be a footnote compared to what it is now, for example.

Return of the Jedi is an intriguing comparison point given that it, too, was the culmination of a widely beloved saga and promised the conclusion to an iconic cliffhanger of a beloved predecessor, The Empire Strikes Back. Sound familiar?

The Infnity Saga finale is slated to open in an industry record 4,662 locations, per Disney’s most recent update. Hypothetically, if Endgame were to match Jedi‘s inflation-adjusted PTA, that would translate to more than $309 million over the weekend. That’s before considering Return of the Jedi didn’t have premium screen surcharges from Dolby and IMAX, while it also didn’t have an entire Thursday evening’s worth of nationwide shows included in the weekend.

Other Franchise Finales

If one looks at how other beloved franchise’s finales performed relative to their predecessors, here’s a breakdown:

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 increased 35.4 percent from Part 1‘s opening weekend (from Infinity War, that would be $348.8 million)
  • Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith increased 35.5 percent from Attack of the Clones (translating $349.2 million)
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King increased 17.1 percent from The Two Towers (translating to $301.8 million)

(Though otherwise a strong comparison point, we’re excluding The Dark Knight Rises from this comparison due to the difficult-to-quantify impact of the Aurora, Colorado tragedy during that film’s opening weekend.)

Market Capacity & Aggregate Weekends

Looking past individual film capacity and more toward the overall amount of money moviegoers are spending lends some insight into the potential of this weekend as well. Year-to-date box office ($2.935 billion) is down 16.5 percent from where it stood through April 23, 2018 ($3.516 billion) despite the blockbuster success of films like Captain Marvel and Us.

Furthermore, during the comparable weekend before Infinity War opened last year, audiences spent $125.5 million across all tracked movies at the box office. This past weekend generated 13.5 percent less with $108.5 million.

These kinds of dips in box office trends are often preludes to not just massive weekends with the right film, but results that often soar past even the most optimistic expectations. Films like Black Panther, Infinity War, The Force Awakens, Jurassic World, and The Avengers each beat highly optimistic tracking by substantial measures in recent years.

The two highest earning weekends on record are those of December 18 – 20, 2015 ($313.3 million) and April 27 – 29, 2018 ($313.9 million) — when The Force Awakens and Infinity War, respectively, opened. Adjusted for inflation, however, the benchmark belongs to July 18 – 20, 2008. Its $260.5 million aggregate earnings adjust to $330.6 million with current ticket prices. That’s when The Dark Knight opened to a then-record $158.4 million ($201 million adjusted) weekend.

The scenarios can play out a number of ways, but based on our expectations for holdover business this weekend (most films will see dramatic drops), reaching the adjusted aggregate weekend record seems to be in play if Endgame fully capitalizes on its potential. In other words, casual audiences will need to respond nearly as positive as critics have, granting the film a stellar 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score — one of the highest ever for a Marvel movie.

Overseas Performance

Last but not least, overseas performance itself may be a strong indicator of where things are heading. Endgame set a new opening day record in China with $107.5 million earlier this week, 61 percent higher than Infinity War‘s first day there last year (although it opened two weeks after the U.S. launch, so comparisons are slightly skewed).

Today, the studio reported an overall $169.0 million international opening day across 25 markets — setting new industry records in the vast majority of territories.

Final Thoughts

With a film this unprecedented and tracking that has reached unknown territory, it’s important to emphasize that regardless of whether or not Endgame lands on the low, middle, or high end of forecasts, this is going to be an historic weekend no matter what.

Barring unforeseen circumstances beyond the box office market itself, Endgame is highly likely to topple Infinity War‘s opening weekend record. If/when that happens, the Avengers franchise will tie Jurassic Park with its third record debut, trailing only Star Wars and Batman (four times each).

Pound for pound, our models indicate a domestic opening weekend ranging as “low” as $275 million and as high as $325 million. The latter is incredibly optimistic, though mathematically, it is achievable at the rate showtimes continue to be added and tickets continue to sell ahead of the daily pace of Infinity War.

Globally, we and other industry analysts continue to expect the film could top $900 million by the end of the weekend — thanks in large part to China opening the film day-and-date with the rest of the world this time around. That would be enough to topple Infinity War‘s global opening weekend record ($640.5 million) and The Fate of the Furious‘s international opening record ($443.2 million).

Top 10 vs. Last Year

Boxoffice projects this weekend’s top ten films will increase between 9 and 19 percent from the same weekend last year when Avengers: Infinity War debuted to an all-time record $257.7 million weekend as part of an overall $303.0 million top ten frame.

Samsung Showcases New Display Solutions at Latest Executive Briefing Center in Irvine

PRESS RELEASE

IRVINE, CA – April 25, 2019 – Today, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. announced the opening of the latest Executive Briefing Center (EBC) in Irvine, California. The 7,500 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility features the full Samsung digital display, commercial TV and monitor portfolio. The new location is the third briefing center for Samsung in the United States behind New Jersey and New York, and the first in California. The EBC will be open five days a week from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. PDT and is in the center of Orange County.

“Samsung has a rich history of innovative display solutions and we are thrilled at the opportunity to showcase our technology, built for business at the new EBC,” says Mario DiAntonio, Team Leader – B2B Technical Account Management at Samsung Electronics America. “This world-class center will be a space where we can highlight the latest in cutting-edge display technologies, designed to drive meaningful engagement and accelerate growth in business.”

Samsung leaders will host everything from customer meetings to large events and workshops at the new EBC. Recently released data from IHS Markit, the leading provider of digital signage market data, identified Samsung as the top selling brand in the industry since 2009. According to the IHS Technology report “Public Displays Market Tracker,” Samsung accounted for 25.8% of the global market share for digital signage unit sales in 2018. Samsung offers technology that fulfills the increasing demands of today’s businesses, provides the opportunity to change workspaces and create new, immersive experiences for customers.

The EBC will feature the below technologies, among others.

The Wall

Samsung’s 146-inch “The Wall” is a modular, MicroLED display that delivers intense black and pure colors along with sharp brightness and contrast. Its 0.8 mm-pixel pitch delivers near perfect viewing from any angle. Additionally, the bezel-less design enables the individual modules of The Wall to fit together seamlessly, removing limitations to screen size and making it difficult to tell where the screen ends, and the wall begins.

Intelligent 8K Digital Signage

The new Samsung QLED 8K Signage pairs the market’s highest resolution display with Artificial Intelligence (AI) upscaling technology to produce lifelike images and allow users to enjoy immersive viewing experiences. The AI upscaling technology in the commercial displays captures the attention of customers including store owners and advertisers. The new slim design, at less than 40mm deep, provides hassle-free installation and with Samsung’s advanced optical technology, the screen blends into nearly any environment. With a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 pixels, individual pixels in an image become imperceptible to the human eye. The QLED 8K display delivers enhanced color presentation through local dimming and Quantum Light Control as well as features HDR10+ along with 4,000nit peak brightness. Installation is expected to begin this summer.

LED Displays for Commercial Settings

Samsung’s IF Series displays in fine pixel pitches P1.2 and P1.5 will also be featured at the EBC. The displays leverage LED HDR scene adaptation technology to showcase a detailed and realistic picture. Samsung LED Display IF Series reach peak brightness levels nearly two times higher than standard LED maximum brightness norms. Often, conventional LED displays struggle to present red, green and blue color hues accurately and without distortion in low grayscale settings. The IF Series displays alleviate these challenges through a unique grayscale management algorithm that maintains consistent R/G/B gradation for improved color accuracy. As a result, low-brightness indoor environments, such as galleries, museums and shops, can display content at optimal quality with uniform and precise color expression.

Collaborative Workplace Solutions

Samsung displays and solutions designed for the workplace offer extensive connectivity and advanced functionality. The Samsung Flip featured at the EBC is a versatile and portable digital flipchart that enhances today’s fast-paced, digital-centric workflow. The 55-inch UHD display supports up to four simultaneous writers so teams can work together with ease. It drives greater collaboration, expands presentation capabilities and is ideal for all types of meetings, from training to group brainstorming. Also showcased is the QBN-W series, available in 75-inches, featuring enhanced touch technology, the intuitive MagicIWB S5 solution and UHD picture quality to boost productivity and collaboration.
