CinemaCon, the annual convention organized by the National Association of Theatre Owners, is back after a cancelled 2020 edition and a muted 2021 affair.
It has only been eight months since the movie theater industry last gathered at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. That event was held as the world was grappling with the emergence of the Covid-19 Delta variant and low vaccination rates across several key markets, resulting in what could best be described as a CinemaCon Lite version of the event. Decreased attendance from international delegates, pre-taped studio presentations, and a low turnout on the trade show floor were a reflection of where the cinema industry was last August. The progress made in the eight months since paints a much different picture as the industry heads back to Las Vegas this week.
A string of box office hits and the stabilization of the release calendar has provided the foundation cinema owners needed in order to seriously pursue a recovery. While the 2022 box office will still finish well below pre-pandemic figures, it appears the worst is over for cinema owners around the world. Theatrically-exclusive films are back on screens (under shortened windows) and recent box office receipts confirm audiences are returning. The task ahead is rebuilding much of the momentum that was lost in the past two years, a factor that could make this year’s CinemaCon the most important to date.
As we head into this year’s programming of panels, studio presentations, and new product showcases, Boxoffice Pro‘s editors share their biggest questions surrounding CinemaCon 2022:
Can Theatrical Thrive without Tentpoles?
Box office blockbusters have always been a big part of the movie business, but the post-pandemic market has relied on the performance of fewer titles to remain competitive. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($804.3M), The Batman ($366.6M), Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($213.5M), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($224.5M)—superhero movies are keeping cinemas around the world in business since the reopening. Marketed as global cultural events, they’re a welcome lifeline to drive business—but theatrical will have a hard time hitting pre-pandemic figures without a more diverse slate of titles hitting screens.
Now that superhero movies have proved the cinema industry can still set record admissions levels, the movie theater industry must focus on recapturing habitual moviegoing and reconnect with audiences looking to go to theaters more than once per month. A couple of panel sessions on Monday will address the challenge from different angles. Former UNIC CEO Jan Runge moderates “Blockbusters or Bust,” (10.30 AM, Palace Ballroom III) exploring how to best target overlooked audience segments to maximize earnings between tentpoles. Later that day, “New Revenue via Gaming and Esports” (4 PM, Palace Ballroom III) will look at how video games can help fill gaps in the release slate by engaging with cinemas’ most loyal demographic.
Premiumization and Improving the Standard (Auditorium): What Do Today’s Moviegoers Expect from the Theatrical Experience?
The rise of Premium Large Format (PLF) auditoriums was already a trend before the pandemic, but their prominence has been accelerated by audiences’ willingness to pay higher prices to see new releases in the best possible conditions. Brands like Imax, Dolby Cinema, and ICE Theaters are being complemented by exhibitors’ own in-house PLF concepts like Regal RPX, Cinemark XD, and Cineplex UltraAVX. The rise of digital ticketing since the pandemic has also pushed PLF auditoriums as prime sites for advance ticket bookings—often being the first auditoriums to sell-out as soon as a tentpole title goes on sale.
A parallel trend that has emerged on the back of PLF’s recent prominence is an increased focus on upgrading and enhancing standard auditoriums to meet consumer expectations across an entire circuit. “There are a lot of theaters in this industry that have not been remodeled,” shared B&B Theatres CEO Bob Bagby at a recent Boxoffice Pro webinar. “If you don’t have an updated theater with recliners, people just don’t go.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment was the only major studio to vociferously express its support for theatrical exclusivity at last year’s event. They backed up their talk by sticking with theatrically-exclusive dates for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Ghostbusters Afterlife, and Spider-Man No Way Home, a trio of titles that finished among the ten highest-grossing films of 2021. Their slate this year doesn’t have as many box office guarantees. The studio moved its animated Spider-Man sequel to 2023 and exhibitors will be curious to see what Sony has left on the schedule that can keep audiences coming back to theaters.
Will Neon Give Us an Extended Look at the New David Cronenberg Movie?
Neon stretched out the theatrical release of Titane to over 500 US theaters last year, not a bad feat for a French-language body horror movie. Winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes probably helped legitimize Titane in getting more multiplex screens than we would have otherwise expected, but a $1.4 million domestic run on that movie is nothing short of impressive. This year the Boxoffice Pro team is heading into the Neon CinemaCon presentation with one sole objective: seeing more footage of another body horror movie premiering at Cannes, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future.
What’s Going on with Warner Bros.’ The Flash?
Your guess is as good as ours. The last of the current iteration of multiverse titles on the release schedule is set to come out in June 2023, when the DC Extended Universe tries its hand at connecting its multiple versions of superhero franchises in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. This movie could—and should—be a big hit with audiences. But legal troubles involving star Ezra Miller have embroiled the production in doubt, leading us to wonder if the film remains on track for next summer. If a delay is imminent, exhibitors may be assuaged with updates on Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa (May 24, 2024) or Dune: Part II (October 20, 2023).
Does Avatar 2 Even Exist and Will Disney Include It in its Slate Presentation?
It has been six years since James Cameron took the stage at 20th Century Fox’s CinemaCon 2016 presentation and announced Avatar 2 would be in theaters by the end of 2018, followed by annual sequels through 2022.
It is now 2022 and while we haven’t seen as much as a teaser trailer for Avatar 2 since that announcement was made, several important developments have taken place. 20th Century Fox was acquired by Disney, the cinema industry reached record heights before being plunged into an existential crisis by a global pandemic, and a theatrically-exclusive release (or, in Pixar’s case, a theatrical release at all) is not a guarantee for any title in Disney’s pipeline. If Avatar 2 is indeed a real film that exists, Disney’s CinemaCon 2022 presentation is a golden opportunity to show footage or at least confirm its December 16, 2022 release date.
Can Universal’s Tentpoles Survive Without Superheroes?
Universal is an outlier in an era where the modern blockbuster franchise has been defined by Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Universal has found a way to release global tentpoles without having to rely on superhero IPs, a streak could be challenged in the post-pandemic market. Jurassic World: Dominion (June 10) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (July 1) are poised to pack theaters this summer. We’ll be paying closer attention to see if the studio unveils footage from Jordan Peele’s Nope (July 22), Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans (November 23), and the animated Mario movie (December 21).
Top Gun: Maverick Sounds Great, But What Else Does Paramount Have on its Slate?
Paramount is going all-in on promoting Top Gun: Maverick to exhibitors in Las Vegas. They’ll have a captive audience for it: Top Gun: Maverick was voted as the most anticipated new release of the year by exhibitors in our annual readers’ poll. The studio will screen the film in its entirety during its slate presentation followed by a lunch-time panel featuring director Joseph Kosinski.
It’s all well and good—cinemas are counting on the Top Gun sequel to pack theaters next month—but there are serious questions about Paramount’s theatrical plans beyond Tom Cruise movies. The studio will need to balance the priorities of its corporate parent’s streaming service, Paramount Plus, moving forward. How will that affect its theatrical slate in 2023 and beyond? The first glimpse of that future will be revealed at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation.
Will Lionsgate Become a Bridge for Faith-Based Films to Reach Multiplexes?
We’re hoping John Wick: Chapter 4 plays a role in Lionsgate’s studio presentation. The action sequel was originally slated to release over Memorial Day weekend but was pushed to March 24, 2023 late last year. Lionsgate showcased a number of faith-based titles at last year’s edition of the event, and exhibitors will be curious just how the rest of its line-up shapes out for the coming years.
Heading into this weekend, Universal / DreamWorks’ animatedThe Bad Guyswas projected to come in somewhere around third place with about $15 million. Instead, it beats most expectations by debuting in first place with an estimated $24 million.
Compared to the openings for other recent animated titles from the past year, that’s:

+38% ahead ofThe Addams Family 2($17.3M)
+50% ahead ofThe Boss Baby: Family Business($16.0M), though its box office was curtailed by premiering day-and-date simultaneously on Peacock.

The Bad Guysfollows five animals who team up to form a criminal gang: a tarantula voiced by Awkwafina, a wolf voiced by Sam Rockwell, a snake voiced by Marc Maron, a piranha voiced by Anthony Ramos, and a shark voiced by Craig Robinson.

Sonic Keeps Pace
Paramount’s family action-comedySonic the Hedgehog 2opened on top two weekends ago, exceeding the opening of its February 2020 predecessor by +24%. After that, the sequel fell -59% to second place in its sophomore frame—still earning a bit more than its predecessor’s sophomore frame, but with a steeper percentage drop.
Now in its third weekend, it actually falls below its predecessor’s third weekend, declining -48% to an estimated $15.2M, compared to $16.3M for the original.
Sonic 2has out-performed its predecessor through the same point with $145.8M domestic, which is +13% ahead of the original’s $128.6M through the equivalent period in release.
Through the same point in release, the sequel is also running:
+9% ahead of 2017’sThe LEGO Batman Movie($133.2M)
+25% ahead of 2019’sPokemon: Detective Pikachu($116.2M)
+45% ahead of February’sUncharted($100.3M)

+75% ahead of 2019’sThe LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part($83.2M)
However, the sequel is running:
-16% behind 2019’sJumanji: The Next Level($175.4M)
-20% behind 2014’sThe LEGO Movie($183.0M)
-40% behind 2017’sJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle($245.6M)
Sonic 2stars the voices of Ben Schwartz and Idris Elba alongside Jim Carrey as the live-action villain. It’s now earned $142M overseas and $287.8M globally, led by the U.K. ($26.3M), Mexico ($15.7M), France ($14.3M), and Australia ($13.1M).

The Secrets of ‘Tumble’-dore
Last weekend’s leader, Warner Bros.’Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledoreunderwhelmed at the box office with a $42.1M opening. That was by far a new low for either theHarry Potteror spinoffFantastic Beastsfranchises, although it was about in line with pre-release projections.
This weekend it fell faster than Harry fell from the sky in theChamber of SecretsQuidditch sequence, declining by -67% to an estimated $14.0M.
That’s a considerably sharper sophomore frame drop than:
2016’sFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them(-39%), although that came on Thanksgiving weekend which softened its decline. The subsequent frame, with no holiday, it fell -60%.
2018’sFantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald(-53%). Same deal: its second frame was Thanksgiving which softened the blow, and on the subsequent frame with no holiday, it fell -61%.
The other major fantasy spinoff film series of the past decade wasThe Hobbit, spun off fromThe Lord of the Rings.Dumbledoresimilarly posts a steeper sophomore frame drop than for any of those three films:
2012’sThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey(-56%).
2013’sThe Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug(-57%).
2014’s:The Hobbit: The Battle of the FiveArmies(-25%), though its second frame was Christmas weekend. The subsequent frame, with no holiday, it fell -47%.
Taking place in the Harry Potter universe in the 1920s and 1930s, this third installment in the supposed five-partFantastic Beastsseries is directed by David Yates, who directed the two prior installments as well as the final fourPotterfilms. Starring Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law as the titular Albus Dumbledore, the script was co-written by originalPotternovelist J.K. Rowling.
Representing the North Side
Focus Features’ historical action-adventureThe Northmanbegan in fourth place with an estimated $12.0M. That’s about in line with—and in some cases a bit higher than—pre-release projections, which had it around $9M.
Compared with other medieval action movies, the opening was:
+30% ahead of 2018’sRobin Hood($9.1M)
Nnd not only more than double 2021’sThe Last Duel($4.7M opening), but also exceeds that film’s $10.8M total.
Northmanalso opens +36% above director Robert Eggers’ 2016 releaseThe Witch($8.8M).
Northman’s audience was 68% male and 73% ages 25 and older. The film earned a “B” rating from audiences on CinemaScore.
It’s now earned $11.5M overseas and $23.5M globally in 42 markets. Top territories include the U.K. ($3.0M) and Mexico ($1.8M).
Northmanstars Alexander Skarsgård as the title character, a Viking prince and warrior, alongside Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe.
Caged In
Lionsgate’s action-comedyThe Unbearable Weight of Massive Talentbegan in fifth place with an estimated $7.1M, in line with pre-release projections.
The film stars Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself, forced to emulate his most noteworthy film characters from his decades-long career in order to complete a secret agent mission.
Cage spent many years as a bankable leading man (National Treasure,Ghost Rider,Moonstruck)with one Academy Award Best Actor win (Leaving Las Vegas) and another nomination (Adaptation.). In recent years, the past decade in particular, that reputation has shifted somewhat as his roles became both far more numerous and less financially successful.
Excluding animated titles, this represents Cage’s best opening weekend with a lead role 2014’sLeft Behind($6.3M). Prior to that, his best opening in a lead role was 2012’s sequelGhost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance($22.1M).
Weekend Comparisons
Total box office this weekend came in around $92.3M, which is:
-13% below last weekend’s total of $106.8M, whenFantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledoreled with $42.1M.
4.7x the equivalent weekend in 2021 with $19.5M, as the box office was taking its first pandemic-era steps back to normalcy asGodzilla vs. Kongled for a third consecutive frame with $7.8M.
-15% behind the equivalent weekend in 2019 (the last pre-pandemic year) with $109.1M, whenThe Curse of La Lloronaled for a second frame with $26.3M.
YTD comparisons
Year-to-date box office stands around $1.81B. That’s:
4.7x this same point in the pandemic recovery year of 2021 ($380.3M).
+1% ahead of this same point in 2020, with $1.78B. Note: the 2020 box office had been running ahead of 2022’s YTD until mid-March, the point when cinemas essentially shut down nationwide that year. Accordingly, the 2022 YTD comparison has consistently risen for the past month, and finally overtakes the equivalent 2020 figure this weekend.
-38% behind this same point in 2019, the last pre-pandemic year ($2.93B).
Top Distributors
As has been the case all year so far, the leading distributor in the domestic market remains Sony Pictures with $472.3M. Warner Bros. ranks a close second with $445.9M.
Paramount currently claims third with $373.0M and Universal claims fourth with $175.4M.
Disney seems poised to take the crown at some point this summer or possibly fall, particularly if including their subsidiary 20th Century Studios releases.
Sunday’s Studio Weekend Estimates: April 22-24, 2022

“As cinemas evolve to multipurpose, multi-venue entertainment centers, there is a need to take a holistic view of the audio, video, and control needs of each site,” QSC’s President and Chief Operating Officer Jatan Shah said in a press release. “Since the Q-SYS Platform offers this capability and more, our business strategy has also evolved to consider the whole technology ecosystem for today’s cinema. MiT assuming the USL Accessibility products line will enable QSC to focus on delivering the Q-SYS Platform solution and work with other suppliers as technology partners to better serve the changing needs of our customers.”
“Acquiring this technology reinforces MiT’s commitment to enabling a whole host of underserved communities to enjoy the moviegoing experience,” said Joe Delgado, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at MiT. “In conjunction with the soon-to-be-released MiTranslator, which will allow non-English proficient moviegoers to enjoy the cinema in their native language, adding the QSC USL line of accessibility products and services eliminates barriers for the hearing- and vision-impaired. Additionally, providing these valuable tools to our exhibition partners will only add to their success in reaching out to previously untapped markets.”
“Over the years, MiT has proven itself as a valued QSC sales partner,” says Barry Ferrell, Senior Director of Cinema Product Development, QSC. “We’re confident that MiT is the right fit to continue providing this very important accessibility technology to moviegoers.”
AMC Theatres, the largest cinema chain in the United States, is upgrading the newrly half of its domestic circuit to laser projection through cinema technology provider Cinionic. The deal represents the first major projection technology upgrade for AMC since it first transitioned to digital.
The projection upgrade initiative—branded as Laser at AMC, Powered by Cinionic—will introduce Cinionic laser projection to 3,500 AMC auditoriums in the United States. Installations are scheduled to begin later this year on a market-by-market basis across the United States and continue through 2026.
The laser projectors and associated auditorium upgrades are valued around a quarter of a billion dollars, according to the circuit. AMC will only have to commit a fraction of that cost upfront through Cinionic’s Cinema-as-a-Service program, which provides flexible financing terms for circuits looking to upgrade their projection equipment.
The Laser at AMC experience delivered by laser projection from Cinionic includes improved picture contrast compared to digital projectors, more vivid color, and maximum picture brightness, with guaranteed light levels that exceeds most 2D digital projection. Cinionic, and founding partner Barco, have spearheaded laser-based presentation technology for cinema since 2014 and today boasts more than 30,000 laser projectors installed in theaters worldwide.
In addition to Laser at AMC, powered by Cinionic, AMC offers laser projection in its Premium Large Format auditoriums: Dolby Cinema at AMC, PRIME at AMC, and select IMAX at AMC, as well as in its recent new-build openings.
“For the last two years as AMC has navigated its way through the pandemic, we have done so not only with the intention of survival, but with an eye to the future of moviegoing and continuing to enhance the guest experience at our theaters,” said Adam Aron, Chairman and CEO of AMC Theatres, in a press release. “Through our wonderful Premium Large Format partnerships with IMAX and Dolby, AMC is firmly established as the industry leader in premium experiences. Laser at AMC, powered by Cinionic, allows us to bring a premium on-screen presentation to hundreds of our theatres and thousands of auditoriums around the country, for a greener way to go to the movies, with only a minimal capital investment. This partnership with Cinionic helps ensure that the future of the on-screen presentation at AMC is, fittingly, very bright.”
“At Cinionic, we’re in this for the long-term. Together with AMC, we’re giving moviegoers the laser difference that you can only get in the cinema,” added Wim Buyens, CEO of Cinionic. “Made possible by our industry-pioneering Cinema-as- a-Service program, the partnership with AMC enables a consistent, elevated, and laser-powered big screen experience for the next generation. Cinionic is dedicated to cinema and investing in its future.”
This week’s outlook focuses on the return of the Crawley family in Downton Abbey: A New Era, a sequel to one of 2019’s breakout performers.
Additional tracking updates are available in the chart below, including the latest (and climbing) targets for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Downton Abbey: A New Era
Focus Features
May 20, 2022
PROS:
The previous film smashed expectations as the widely acclaimed and popular television drama’s leap to the big screen scored over $31 million in its domestic debut frame with solid staying power that led to a $96.9 million finish (part of $237.9 million globally).
Anticipation among fans looks high based on early trailer reception following a few pandemic-induced delays over the past year, and a release date in early summer should be advantageous for the target older audience ready to return to movie theaters.
With minimal competition for women (74 percent of which comprised the first film’s debut) in the market prior to its release, A New Era is unrivaled for the age 35+ crowd and could be a healthy counter-programmer through Memorial Day weekend in its second frame.
To that end, it might also be one of the films that marks a turning point — or at least a standout — for older audiences and what they prioritize a theatrical viewing for during the waning days of the pandemic.
A premium format presence is confirmed in Dolby Cinema, which should help boost fan interest.
CONS:
As always, tracking for movies targeted primarily to adult women remains the most volatile to model during the pandemic recovery era. Some natural diminished returns as a sequel are further compounded by that caution, as well as the evolution of older audience habits over the past few years.
Universal is likely, though not confirmed, to make this sequel available on streaming after 17 days as it has with several films over the past year. The core older audience not feeling a need to rush out to cinemas could speculatively wait for that potential at-home rollout in early June.
Early ticket pre-sales, while far from negative, are on par with Death on the Nile after its initial sales window. The major asterisk there, however, is that A New Era‘s pre-sale window is three weeks longer than Nile‘s was, so there is plenty of room for growth and improvement to be expected in the weeks ahead.
